Special Weather Statement Issued by NWS NorthernIndiana (Northern Indiana and Northeastern Ohio)

Indiana Target Area: Adams, Allen, Blackford, Cass, De Kalb, Elkhart, Fulton, Grant, Huntington, Jay, Kosciusko, La Porte, Lagrange, Marshall, Miami, Noble, Pulaski, St. Joseph, Starke, Steuben, Wabash, Wells, White, and Whitley Counties.

Showers and thunderstorms have developed across the area. Pea size hail has been observed with the stronger storms and will likely continue. Gusty winds around 40 mph are also possible. Along with the winds and hail, conditions today support the development of what meteorologists call cold air funnel clouds, as well as waterspouts, especially over southern Michigan. A cold air funnel is a funnel cloud that does not develop in a typical severe weather environment. Cold air funnel clouds are generally weak and short-lived and very rarely touch down. Those that do reach the ground become weak tornadoes (winds often 50 mph or less) that generally produce only minor damage.

Instructions: If funnel clouds are sighted today...play it safe and get inside a sturdy structure immediately.
